2018 The Burning of Juan Carnaval held in Corozal

Carnaval is a Western Christian and Greek Orthodox festive season that occurs before the liturgical season of Lent. With the Ash, Wednesday, Carnival ends, and Lent begins, preparation time for 40 days for the Crucifixion, Death, and Resurrection of the Lord, all within the Catholic Church. The main events typically occur during February or early March, during the period historically known as Shrovetide (or Pre-Lent). Carnival typically involves a public celebration or parade combining some elements of a circus, masks, and a public street party. People wear masks and costumes during many such celebrations, allowing them to lose their everyday individuality and experience a heightened sense of social unity.
Excessive consumption of alcohol, meat, and other foods proscribed during Lent is extremely common. Other common features of carnival include mock battles such as food fights; social satire and mockery of authorities; the grotesque body displaying exaggerated features, especially large noses, bellies, mouths, and phalli, or elements of animal bodies; abusive language and degrading acts; depictions of disease and gleeful death; and a general reversal of everyday rules and norms. The comparsas is a type of carnival group that takes to the streets to interpret their music and dance. The instruments, the type of dance and the character of the show are specific to each country in which they exist, and in many carnivals in the world, competitions are held where they compete for various prizes.

Here is a documentary about Juan Carnaval:
After the walk I read the will, which was nothing more than a document that was made among all the neighbors and in which "Juan" distributed his goods among his friends; So one year, he left Dr. Castellanos gloves that lived in that block, to operate; his shoes to Don Trino Malpica, his guitar to Don Chilo Cupido ... and so ... Finally, Juan was burned. Thus ended on Ash Wednesday with joy and respect before midnight, "because the next day you had to go to work." Today, like Juan, tradition has died. his guitar to Don Chilo Cupido ... and so ... Finally, Juan was burned. Thus ended on Ash

Wednesday with joy and respect before midnight, "because the next day you had to go to work." Today, like Juan, tradition has died. his guitar to Don Chilo Cupido ... and so ... Finally, Juan was burned. Thus ended on Ash Wednesday with joy and respect before midnight, "because the next day you had to go to work." Today, like Juan, tradition has died.  As a complement to the narrative of Diani we copy a fragment of the blog "Villahermosa Antigua" by Don Anonio Vidal Cruz, in which he refers to the same tradition.

"By Wednesday, after three days of carnival, the festivities were meeting, such as the neighbors of Plazuela del Águila,  Juan Sánchez , better known as  Juan Submarino,  who was responsible for the organization. Don  Manuel Perez , owner of the store ' La Lucha ' -in Zaragoza corner with Morelos- and Don Pedro Ancona , were given the task of hiring widows, for the journey as Juan Carnaval's last walk.  Some men dressed as widows and placed pillows on their bellies simulating pregnant women. Who was going to cost with the testament, was  Chucho Quero, son of Mr. Carmito Quero , composer of " The Man of the Southeast " and after the tour was made the reading of the will, to make way for the burning.

In Belize, on the northern part, especially Corozal, the culture is dying off. With a boost of bringing back the culture, it will surely promote Corozal's culture. And, with the hard work of Corozal House of Culture, it will promote Carnaval's history every year. this year on Sunday, February 11, 2018, Carnaval was held at Miami Beach and commenced at 2pm. Carnaval was filled with young kids and adults painting each other with various bottled paints. After the paint was held, the Carnaval moved to the Los Mascarados, and comparsas dance around town and on the stage.  Then, the host moved on to the reading of last will and testament reading the history of Juan Carnaval. Last, he was the best part of the event it was the burning of Juan Carnaval.
