Christopher Columbus is Observed on October 12 in Belize

Columbus Day. October 12th is the day in which the Americas observe Columbus Day, otherwise known as the Day of the Americas or Pan American Day. Belize first ever Nationwide Ray Sanctuary

The government of Belize announced the establishment of the first-ever nationwide ray sanctuary, motivated, in part, by data from Global FinePrint scientists at FIU.
Globally, rays are threatened with extinction due largely to overfishing, habitat loss and climate change. They are even more at risk than sharks. More than 20 species of rays are known to populate the waters along Belize.
As part of Global FinePrint, FIU researchers have deployed baited remote underwater videos (BRUVs) to monitor the abundance and distribution of sharks and rays, hoping to fill critical data gaps and guide conservation strategies throughout the world. While combing through hundreds of hours of video footage to inform Belize’s National Plan of Action for sharks, scientists found thriving populations of rays. BTB launches “A Dollar for the Caribbean Relief Fund”

Belize City, Monday October 2, 2017: The Belize Tourism Board (BTB), in collaboration with tourism industry stakeholders, will launch a Dollar for the Caribbean Relief Fund campaign during the entire month of October to assist victims of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, which severely devastated many of our Caribbean sister countries earlier in September.
The Belize Tourism Board will donate a $1 for every tourist arrival for the month of October and the initiative is that each stakeholder donates a $1 for every guest; therefore, creating a multiplier effect. The BTB initiative is being supported by participating agencies and tourism stakeholders such as the Belize Tourism Industry Association (BTIA), the Belize Hotel Association (BHA), Tour Operators, water taxis, hoteliers and local airlines amongst many others.

Breast Cancer Month in Belize

The Belmopan Cancer Society will be very active in October in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We will participate in the "Walk for a Green Belize" being organized by the Department of the Environment. "Walk for a Green Belize" will involve cleaning the sides of the George Price Highway on Saturday 14th October.
