It’s Carnival Season around Belize is celebrating its 36th Anniversary of Independence and festivities has been planned throughout the entire month of September around Belize. Independence Day 2017 will be a special time in Belize as the country celebrates its 36th anniversary of gaining full sovereignty. The occasion will be marked with a number of amazing celebrations, parties, and activities. This year's official theme is Belize: Confronting challenges! Celebrating Triumphs! Renewing our Resolve!

September 10th Saint George's Caye Day: The Battle of St. George's Caye was a short military engagement that lasted from 3 to 10 September 1798, off the coast of what is now Belize. However, the name is typically reserved for the final battle that occurred on 10 September. The Spaniards had previously attempted to expel the Settlers on six occasions, most recently in 1779. September 10, 1798 marked the final Spanish attempt to take over the area. Today, the Battle of St. George's Caye is a national public and bank holiday. However, the symbolic meaning and significance of celebrating the 10th vary upon class and ethnic backgrounds.
A British Crown Colony since 1862, Belize was declared an independent nation from on September 21st, 1981 and celebrations run from ‘St Georges Caye Day’ on September 10th right up until Independence Day.
Independence Day celebrations are certainly a testament to the Belizeans’ love of a good party, with flags proudly flying, vibrant parades, lively dancing and a multitude of food stalls serving up delicious local foods.

The theme calls on us to recognize the often difficult decisions that must be made to ensure our nation’s progress. It acknowledges the moment in which we take pleasure in the victories of our past and present, and uses these accomplishments to strengthen our advancement into the future.
Over 250 entries were submitted for this year’s Theme Competition.
A panel appointed by the National Celebrations Commission then narrowed the field to the top 58 entries.National Theme Day, will highlight Belize’s richly diverse cultural heritage with several events held across the country, including a National Song Competition to give both professional and amateur musicians a venue in which to showcase their original contributions to promote national pride, artistic freedom, and the unique cultural heritage of Belize.
Each entry was scored and Sosa’s entry attained the highest score, claiming the grand prize of this year’s National Celebration Theme Contest 2017.
